Microgrids serve areas that are connected to the electric grid yet can be islanded during an outage to continue providing electricity through a variety of resources, including solar panels, a battery and/or backup generator.

As a result of climate change, Hawaii and other locations around the world are becoming increasingly vulnerable to severe weather events.

This underscores the importance of decarbonizing our energy system and strengthening the resilience of our communities.

Community insight and feedback are critical as we plan for energy resilience and a decarbonized grid. Hybrid community workshops are being held across Oahu for community members to join either in person, or online. These workshops will document community insight on facilities and services that are most important to prioritize with power.

We’ll also introduce renewable energy planning concepts and document feedback on the potential for renewable generation on Oahu.

Next stage of renewable energy projects for Oahu and Maui

Maintaining Safe and Reliable Energy for Customers

To help meet Hawaii’s decarbonization goals, Hawaiian Electric has filed a draft request for proposals (RFP) for potentially a broad array of renewable energy projects Oahu and Maui.

Once the draft is approved by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the company will seek proposals for a variety of renewable energy and capacity resources on Oahu and Maui that includes but is not limited to wind, solar, biomass and biofuels. Standalone energy storage proposals also will be accepted.

This draft RFP is unique in that it includes firm renewable capacity for both islands. Firm renewable energy differs from intermittent resources such as solar and wind in that it is available at all times. While previous RFPs have focused exclusively on intermittent resources, this new procurement seeks to broaden the future generation mix to ensure the two islands have a diverse portfolio of generation resources.

Hawaiian Electric will host virtual public meetings to seek input on the draft RFP. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback during the meetings.

Oahu firm renewable virtual community meeting

To help meet Hawaii’s decarbonization goals, Hawaiian Electric will file a draft Request for Proposals for firm renewable energy procurement for Oahu.

Firm renewable energy differs from intermittent resources such as solar and wind in that it is available for use at all times, except when undergoing maintenance. This has been an important part of Hawaiian Electric's plans dating back to its 2016 Power Supply Improvement Plan.

Hawaiian Electric hosted a virtual community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2022 to seek public input prior to filing the draft RFP. View recorded event.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback by emailing oahurenewablerfp@hawaiianelectric.com. The event will re-air on March 5 at 9 p.m., March 6 at 10 p.m., March 7 at 3:30 p.m., and March 11 at 8 a.m. on Olelo54.

Hawaiian Electric will be seeking proposals to acquire 500 to 700 megawatts of energy from firm renewable generation resources. Proposals also will be accepted from existing firm generation projects for new terms after conversion to using renewable fuels. If approved, the projects are expected to come online by 2031. The timeline for proposals, subject to PUC approval, is:
